When the Dispatch of Business team decided that, due to discouraging COVID-19 trends, it was prudent to move the legislative portion of the 206th Annual Convention online, they also realized a need to be in the same space—not only because of the introduction of new online voting protocols, an option made possible by the 205th Annual Convention, but also to open Convention with a Eucharist that took place in person.
In discussing possible locations, a wish list emerged that included a hope to broadcast Convention from the east region of the Diocese and a desire to honor one of our historically Black congregations. It was decided that, if the congregations and leadership were willing, St. Mark’s, Wilson was the ideal location.

COLLABORATION AND COMMUNITY
The historic St. Mark’s church building is home both to St. Mark’s, a historically Black congregation, and la Iglesia de la Guadalupana, a predominantly Latino congregation. For more than 20 years, they have shared the building and facilities they both call home while maintaining and celebrating the culture and histories of their congregations. Yet their mutual bond has developed steadily over the years and is easy to see today, especially in the joint food distribution ministry they maintain. They are an example of collaboration and community, perseverance and partnership.
When asked by the Dispatch of Business team if it was possible for St. Mark’s to serve as the Convention host site, the answer was a resounding yes. On multiple occasions, church leaders took time out of their day and met members of the Convention team on-site so plans could be made and needs addressed. Whether it was work on wiring or rearranging the pews in the sanctuary, every request was met with openness, graciousness and a willingness to help.
When the 206th Annual Convention actually took place, members of the congregations did not simply open the doors but graciously took on the role of hosts, making certain those tasked with the event’s production had everything they could need.

Though the meals were catered, volunteers provided additional options to ensure every dietary need was met and created desserts to tempt every palate and sweet tooth. They were a constant presence, providing support and comfort, smiles and warmth, amidst the busy backdrop of Convention itself.
Throughout the process of planning and executing the 206th Annual Convention, the Diocese of North Carolina was made to feel by the members of St. Mark’s and Guadalupana both welcome and at home. We are deeply grateful for their hospitality and generosity, and we thank them for being a living embodiment of beloved community.
