Bishops of the Diocese of North Carolina Give Thanks for the Life of Archbishop Desmond Tutu
The Anglican Communion and the wider church and world have lost a leader who embodied the teachings of Jesus and example of his life in our time. Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s witness for justice, his fearless denunciation of apartheid, his courageous ability to stare down the forces of evil and to offer the promise of love to all, even to his enemies, will stand as a testimony to the power of God in this and every age. Small in stature, but large in heart and vision, we give great thanks for this man, and for the ways his faithful and focused leadership has transformed the church and, profoundly, changed the world.
It has been said that Archbishop Tutu’s moral compass always pointed to equality. May we follow in his footsteps and continue to work for justice, even as we give thanks to God for his extraordinary life and witness. May he go from strength to strength in the life of perfect service.
Almighty God, who created us in your own image: Grant us grace fearlessly to follow the example of Archbishop Desmond Tutu to contend against evil and to make no peace with oppression; and, that we may reverently use our freedom, help us to employ it in the maintenance of justice in our communities and among the nations, to the glory of your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, on God, now and for ever. Amen.
