Collaborative Youth Gathering in Rocky Mount Focused on Baptism

Several weeks ago, four churches in the Rocky Mount Convocation—Calvary, Tarboro; St. Timothy’s, Wilson; and Good Shepherd and St. Andrew’s, Rocky Mount—gathered for a youth retreat hosted by St. Andrew’s.

The theme for the retreat was the baptismal covenant. Participants took a deeper dive into the symbols of baptism with the Rev. Les Carpenter from St. Andrew’s; explored what it means to seek and serve others through baptism with the Rev. Daniel Pinnell from La Guadalupana, Wilson; and reflected on how we strive for justice and peace for all people with the Rev. Becky Zartman Carpenter from Good Shepherd.

Youth and adults alike engaged in lively conversations, reflective journaling and creative artwork that expressed their understanding of the baptismal covenant and how they can continue living it in their daily lives.

Each church brought games to share, creating opportunities for laughter, teamwork and fellowship. Participants also worked together on a mission project, sorting bags for migrant farm workers—an act of service that connected their learning about baptism with meaningful action. A special thank you to the Rev. Susan Schrader for her coordination of this gathering.

This time together was not only enriching for the youth, but also meaningful for the adults, who enjoyed the opportunity to connect with one another. Leaders have already begun making plans to continue gathering in the future.

Lisa Aycock, missioner for youth discipleship, accompanied the planning team and provided some supplies and resources.
