Dr. Prezell Russell Robinson, president of Saint Augustine’s University for nearly 30 years, died Monday, June 29 at the age of 105.
Dr. Robinson’s leadership and legacy remained at Saint Augustine’s University well past his tenure as their eighth and longest-serving president when he retired in 1995. The mark and impact of his visionary leadership was still evident when I began serving as a Trustee in 2017. His capacity to connect with, challenge and champion his students set the tone for all those who followed. His devotion to Saint Augustine’s was matched by his faithful commitment to the teachings of Jesus and The Episcopal Church, where he held prominent leadership roles both locally, in Raleigh, and nationally. Today we stand with Dr. Robinson’s family as they both grieve his death and celebrate his extraordinary life, and with the countless alumni who were shaped by his wisdom, guidance and gracious presence. May he truly rest in peace and rise in glory.

Dr. Robinson will be lie in repose at Saint Augustine’s Chapel (1315 Oakwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC) on Friday, July 10, from 12-4 p.m.
The wake for Dr. Robinson will be held at St. Ambrose Episcopal Church (813 Darby Street, Raleigh, NC), Friday, July 10, from 6-8:30 p.m.
The Burial Office for Dr. Robinson will be held at St. Ambrose Episcopal Church, Saturday, July 11, at 11 a.m. The Committal will take place at Montlawn Memorial Park following the Burial Office.
Those who wish to send flowers to the memorial services, plant a tree in Dr. Robinson’s honor or share a tribute can do so via the Haywood Funeral Home.

O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered: Accept our prayers on behalf of your servant, Prezell, and grant him an entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship of your saints. We thank you for giving him to all who loved him.
Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding: deal graciously with Preznell’s family, friends and loved ones in their grief. Surround them with your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
