Youth Mental Health Resources

Jun 3, 2025 | Youth

Most of us are aware of the mental health crisis affecting our young people today. More than 40% of teenagers state that they struggle with persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and more than half of parents and caregivers express concern over their children’s mental well-being. How can those of us in youth ministry begin to address this growing problem? How can we help and faithfully disciple teenagers when they’re hurting?

Awareness and education about mental health challenges are important steps towards normalizing our conversations and creating safe spaces. Here are three resources to help you minister to our youth experiencing mental health problems and promoting more healthy dialogue in your ministry.

Mental Health First Aid for Teens: This is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The day-long training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. The diocese will be sponsoring a training in the fall.

Sanctuary Mental Health Ministries: This course was created to inspire and equip communities of faith that are asking this important question. Developed in consultation with mental health professionals, theologians and people with lived experience, this eight-session study guide explores key mental health topics and examines meaningful ways to offer companionship, support recovery and promote wellbeing. The course is online, self-paced and free.

Diocesan Mental Health Resource List: This can be a starting place for learning more and starting your journey to understanding and helping your youth and their families.
